The 16 metre (52 feet) long, all-weather Tamar class entered service with the RLNI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) in 2006, being named after the Tamar river in south west England and manufactured by SAR Composites (Hull and superstructure) and Babcock International (fitting out).
Whilst designed to replace the 40 Tyne class boats, only 27 Tamars where built, being used in combination with Shannon class boats. Whilst designed for slipway launch, the boat is stationed at a mixture stations with roughly half slipway launched, a large number moored afloat and the flexability of the design allowing several to form a fleet of reserve boats used to replace other boats as and when required.
Built between 2000 and 2013, there are 27 boats operated by the RNLI , with the prototype being sold to Kent police to become Princess Alexandra III based at Sheerness, which offers an interesting alternative for a modeller to personalise their model, or the model can be futher enhanced with the corresponding model of a Y-class RIB inflatable boat, which the Tamar carries to enable crew to access shallow water or confined spaces.

The Model
The model is 1320.8mm (52 inches) long and 431.8mm (17 inches) wide and with her mast and aerials down is approximately 508mm (20 inches) high. From a modellers point of view, the Tamar has a lot going for it and is fairly uncluttered but has a wonderful flying bridge.
